When moving lubricating oils, fuel oil, and petroleum-based fluids in industrial settings, few pump designs have earned as much trust as the external gear pump. The KCB and 2CY series gear oil pumps combine rugged construction, reliable self-priming, and simple maintenance that keeps them relevant across decades of use in factories and processing plants. For any facility handling oil circulation or fuel supply, understanding what these pumps offer can make a real difference in operational efficiency and long-term equipment cost.

How Gear Pumps Work in Oil Transfer

Two intermeshing gears rotate inside a close-tolerance housing, trapping liquid between the gear teeth and carrying it from the suction side to discharge. In KCB and 2CY models, the driving gear connects directly to the motor shaft while the driven gear rotates freely. As the gears unmesh on the suction side, a partial vacuum draws liquid into the pump. The liquid is then carried around the housing and discharged as the gears re-mesh. This steady, non-pulsating flow makes gear pumps ideal where consistent pressure and volume are needed — in fuel forwarding, lubricating oil circulation, and hydraulic system supply across petroleum, chemical, marine, and power generation industries.

Key Features of the KCB Series

The KCB series is one of the most popular gear pump lines used in industrial pump manufacturing. Its heat-treated gears and shafts provide superior wear resistance under continuous heavy-duty operation. The gear teeth and shaft surfaces are case-hardened to maintain dimensional stability over long service intervals. Many KCB pumps incorporate a built-in safety relief valve, which protects both the pump and piping system from overpressure damage. When discharge pressure exceeds 1.5 times the normal rating, the valve opens and bypasses fluid back to suction, preventing motor overload. An optimized drain and return groove within the pump body reduces radial torque on the gears, lowering bearing loads and improving overall efficiency. For factory maintenance teams, this translates into fewer bearing replacements and longer pump service life.

Understanding the 2CY Series Gear Oil Pump

The 2CY series shares similar design roots with the KCB but places greater emphasis on volumetric efficiency and stable pressure output. Its four floating bearing sleeves automatically adjust end-face clearance based on working pressure, compensating for wear and thermal expansion. This self-adjusting feature maintains tight clearances that minimize internal leakage throughout the pump's operating life. The 2CY series also offers strong self-priming capability, meaning the pump can draw fluid from a lower elevation without manual priming before startup. For systems located above the fluid reservoir or running intermittently, this is a practical time-saver. Standard models handle fluid temperatures up to 80 °C, with high-temperature variants reaching 200-300 °C depending on seal configuration. The standard viscosity range is 5-1500 cSt, extending to 50,000 cSt at reduced speed. Both series are built from cast iron or carbon steel as standard, with stainless steel variants available for food-grade or mildly corrosive liquids.

Applications Across Industries

In petroleum depots and pipeline terminals, KCB and 2CY pumps serve as transfer and booster pumps for crude oil, diesel, and heavy fuel oil. Power plants and boiler rooms use them for fuel supply to burners. Large compressors, rolling mills, and marine engines rely on these pumps for lubricating oil circulation through bearings and gearboxes. The food industry also uses stainless steel gear pump variants for edible oils. Both series require the pumped fluid to provide internal lubrication — they should not be used with non-lubricating solvents, water, or abrasive slurries without consulting the gear pump manufacturer first.

Choosing Between KCB and 2CY

For general-purpose oil transfer where cost-effectiveness and simplicity matter most, the KCB series is often the preferred choice among pump suppliers. Its straightforward design and generous clearances handle variable conditions well. The 2CY series, with its floating bearing sleeves and tighter clearances, suits applications demanding more stable discharge pressure — such as marine fuel supply, boiler feed systems, and hydraulic power units where consistent pressure output is critical to downstream processes.
