NYP Series High Viscosity Pump — Resin, Asphalt and Adhesive Transfer

Handling high-viscosity fluids is one of the most persistent challenges in industrial pumping. When a liquid is thick enough that it barely flows under gravity, standard centrifugal pumps are all but useless. Positive displacement pumps are the correct answer, but not all designs handle thick media equally well. The NYP series high viscosity pump, an internal gear pump with a specially optimized design, has proven itself as one of the most effective solutions for transferring heavy, sticky materials. From asphalt in road construction to resin and adhesive in chemical manufacturing, the NYP pump delivers consistent performance where other pumps fail.

Internal Gear Design Philosophy

The NYP series uses an internal gear configuration — the driving gear is mounted eccentrically inside a larger internal gear ring. As it rotates, the teeth come in and out of mesh, creating expanding and contracting cavities that draw fluid in and push it out. Compared with external gear pumps, the internal design provides several advantages for thick fluids. The inlet chamber is larger, allowing high-viscosity materials to flow in more easily. The gear teeth disengage over a longer arc, giving fluid more time to fill the cavities completely. This reduces cavitation risk that can plague other pump designs with viscous media.

A crescent-shaped partition between the driving gear and internal ring seals the suction side from discharge and guides fluid through the pump. In high-viscosity service, this crescent helps maintain the pressure differential, improving volumetric efficiency compared with designs relying solely on close running clearances for sealing.

Viscosity Handling Capabilities

The NYP series handles fluids from moderately viscous oils up to extremely thick pastes, with limits well beyond 100,000 centipoise — some models handle several hundred thousand centipoise at reduced speed. This makes the pump suitable for materials that are solid at room temperature but become pumpable when heated, such as asphalt, wax, and certain resins. Many installations include heating jackets integrated into the pump casing, allowing steam or thermal oil circulation to maintain the fluid at a workable temperature. Because the internal gear design operates at relatively low speeds, shear forces are minimal — a significant advantage for shear-sensitive products like polymer solutions, adhesive emulsions, and food ingredients.

Resin and Polymer Production

In chemical processing, resin and polymer production involves moving materials from low-viscosity monomers to extremely viscous polymers. The NYP series handles this range effectively, commonly installed for molten resin transfer from reactors to holding tanks, hot-melt adhesive supply in packaging lines, and polymer melt transfer in compounding operations. The pump's stable, non-pulsating flow helps maintain consistent product quality and prevents air entrainment. Stainless steel construction is available for polymer applications where trace metal contamination must be avoided.

Asphalt and Bitumen Transfer

Asphalt and bitumen are among the most challenging fluids to pump. At ambient temperature they are solid; at pumping temperature they are extremely viscous and adhesive. The NYP series has been widely adopted in asphalt production plants and road construction terminals, typically equipped with a heating jacket, high-temperature mechanical seals, and a slow-speed drive. Self-priming is a practical advantage when pumping asphalt from storage tanks below the pump, eliminating the need for separate priming systems and simplifying installation.

Adhesive and Coating Applications

The adhesive and coating industries rely heavily on high-viscosity internal gear pumps. Hot-melt adhesives, solvent-based adhesives, and coatings all have distinct rheological properties requiring careful pump selection. The NYP series provides accurate, repeatable flow controlled by drive speed adjustment. For coating lines where adhesive thickness must be tightly controlled, low-pulsation output is a critical advantage. Cleaning between different formulations is simplified by the pump's straightforward internal geometry — it can be flushed with solvent without complete disassembly.

Working with a High Viscosity Pump Supplier

Correct NYP pump selection requires knowing the fluid's viscosity at both pumping and ambient temperature, required discharge pressure and flow rate, and any solid particles or fillers in the fluid. A knowledgeable pump supplier reviews all parameters before recommending a model. For flammable fluids, guidance on seal selection, motor classification, and grounding is essential. Heating jacket design is another area where supplier expertise matters — the jacket must provide uniform heat distribution to prevent hot spots that degrade the fluid and cold spots where material solidifies. With proper selection and maintenance, an NYP series pump delivers many years of reliable high-viscosity service.
